Gunnar Josef Agaton Holmberg was born on 6 May 1897 in Göteborg. His IFK Göteborg first-team career began in the 1920 season. He made his competitive debut on 7 November 1920 against Helsingborgs IF in Svenska Serien, Division 1, a match that finished 0–1.

In 1924, he won Olympic bronze with the national team. Holmberg made 12 senior international appearances for Sweden.
