Erik Ruben Svensson was born on 28 September 1953 in Karlskoga. His IFK Göteborg first-team career began in the 1978 season. He made his competitive debut on 9 April 1978 against Landskrona BoIS in Allsvenskan, a match that finished 2–1.

He spent 10 seasons with IFK Göteborg's first team and made 387 appearances and scoring 48 goals. Of those 387 appearances, 174 came in Allsvenskan.

Svensson won the Swedish championship with IFK Göteborg in 1982, 1983 and 1984. He was part of the IFK Göteborg side that won the UEFA Cup in 1981/82. He was part of an IFK Göteborg Swedish Cup-winning side in 1978/79, 1981/82 and 1982/83. He was named IFK Göteborg's Archangel of the Year in 1982.
